There are many companies doing scenic flights from Swakopmund over the Namib Desert, three times a day, every day. Scenic flight Routes

Sossusvleiscenic

Duration: 02h15 

 

During the 2 hour 15 minutes flight you will do a round tour from Swakopmund along the Kuiseb River which is a dry river bed dividing the Namib Desert from the flat landscapes in the east. After 30 minutes of flight you will arrive at the Kuiseb Canyon where the pilot will perform the majestic 'Flight of the Phoenix.' En-route to the canyon there are hundreds of oryx' and zebras challenging the heat of the desert seeing who can outlast the other. 

 

It is another 25 minutes flight over the blazing Namib Desert till you get to Sossusvlei. There you will see the gem of Namibia from above; Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. After reaching Sossusvlei, you will fly downhill to the Atlantic Ocean where you will experience fresh weather. Approximately 5 minutes before reaching the coast you will arrive at diamond camps in the middle of the desert which has been deserted for the past 100 years.

 

From reaching the coastline to Swakopmund is another quick 40 minutes. The Eduard Bohlen Shipwreck is the first point of interest which has been wrecked since 1909 and thereafter the Shawnee Shipwreck which wrecked in 1976. Along the coast you will see thousands of seals with strandwolves roaming the territories of the seals looking for a meal. You will also see a lot of flamingos and pelicans at Sandwich Harbour and at the Walvisbay Harbour.  There are many huge ships and oil rigs in the Walvisbay Harbour. Just before reaching Walvisbay, you will arrive at the Walvisbay saltworks which is beautiful with so many different colours. Thereafter you will fly past langstrand back to Swakopmund.

This beautiful scenic flight takes you from Swakopmund to the 'Moon Landscapes' which is an area of beautiful erosion within the Swakop River. Right next to the 'Moon Landscapes' you will the the Rossing Uranium Mine which is the largest open coast mine in the world. In the far North you will start to see the towering Spitzkoppe which is a beautiful landscape towering more than 700 meters above the surrounding landscape.

Then the flight will direct to Brandberg which is the largest mountain in Namibia which is populated by many animals including baboons and leopards. It is also the area where the famous rock painting is called the "White Lady." The area around the mountain you will fly along the Ugab River in which you could possibly spot desert elephants, oryx', zebras and ostriches. The surrounding landscape is magnificent. Reaching the coast line at the Ugab River mouth you will fly southbound. Along the Skeleton Coast there are many washed out wale bones, shipwrecks, remains of explorers and many more articles. The aircraft will fly past Cape Cross which is home to one of the largest Cape Fur Seal colonies in Africa which is estimated at about 250 000 seals.

Further South, you will pass Hentiesbay, Wlotzkasbaken and the Zeila Shipwreck before you reach Swakopmund again.
